Technology has come a long way. There have been tons of developments in all kinds of areas in IT, which have led to the replacement of many technologies. However some of them have stayed with us till this day. It is surprising to see some things still being used even though they were made decades ago.
The motion of the wheel was translated into the X and Y plane on the monitor hence allowing the user to navigate to a specific set of coordinates freely. The patent for this technology was released in 1970 and was called "X-Y position indicator for a display system". Thankfully this technology has survived till this day and might i say looks and functions way better. Furthermore technologies like laser beams and optical mice have become really popular among normal users and gamers. But this is a topic of itself.
Compact cassette tape
An entire generation heard the music that shaped their lives on the cassette tapes. Many of us might have found these in our parents or perhaps grand parents homes. That's their old Spotify or Apple music.

They were originally introduced in the year 1968 and used magnetic tape technology to deliver audio. You could record audio or buy pre-recorded cassettes for things like music or audio books. They even were used as storage media for early home computers. Following those years in the 80s, they gained even more popularities as people began to realize how useful a movable storage of audio can be. However by the 90s they were rendered obsolete by compact discs, which soon became the standard format for audio. As a matter of fact there were around 442 million cassette tapes sold in US alone.
Computer mouse
For most of us the most used and moved piece of technology on our desk, the mouse was invented in the early 1960s by Douglas Engelbart while he was trying to figure out a way to smoothly and instinctively interact with a computer. The first prototype was made in 1964, how ever without any side buttons.

Conclusion
I believe we have made it really far into technology, however there is still so much to improve and create. People are working daily to maximize our efficiency and comfort with new technological advances.
